Wordie Burrow

Wordie Burrow, age 82, of McKinney, Texas passed away February 9, 2010. He was born January 3, 1928 in Walnut, Mississippi. On July 3, 1953 Wordie married Jean Thomas in Reno, Nevada. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, United States Air Force and the United States Army where he was a veteran of World War II. He grew up in Mississippi. He received his masters degree in business from St. Edwards University and his doctorate degree in theology. Wordie retired from the State of Texas as Director of Education at the Commission in Law Enforcement. He also served as a minister for over 50 years while working in other job capacities serving in Nevada, Colorado, Texas, Mississippi and was a missionary in Panama in the Canal Zone and was called the “Pistol Packing Preacher” when he joined the police force while in Panama. Mr. Burrow operated a ham radio while in Panama which allowed servicemen to communicate with their families. He was a police officer in Abilene. Wordie was a Bible Scholar and a member of McDermott Road Church of Christ. He is survived by his wife, Jean Burrow of McKinney, Texas; children, Sandra O’ Dell and husband, Mike of Allen, Texas, Tommy Lewis of Waco, Texas; grandchildren, Leah Lenglet and husband, Neil of Baltimore, Maryland, Julie Bellar of Lubbock, Texas, Becki Sistrunk and husband, Jason of Denton, Texas, Jason Lewis and wife, Tammy of Belton, Texas, Sara Ellison of Waco, Texas, Melissa McClung and husband, Chris of Lorena, Texas; great-grandchildren, Ashley Barrett, Megan McClung, Ryan McClung, Avery Ellison and a host of other loving family members and friends. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 12, 2010 in the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel, Allen, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. prior to the service. Interment with Military Honors will be held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
