William (Bill) Bennett Crowley was born to William Aloysius Crowley and Ruth Bennett in Brooklyn, New York on March 10, 1931. He passed away on July 1, 2020.
He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly Crowley of 27 years, son, Shawn Crowley of Richardson, Texas, brother, Dan Crowley of Cocoa Beach, Florida, stepdaughter, Tiffany Mertens and son-in-law Andy Mertens, two grandsons, Easton Mertens and Landon Mertens of Rockwall, Texas and numerous friends and relatives.
Bill was a Korean War Veteran and served for the duration of the Korean War. He was a United States Marine and served his Country with great sacrifice and bravery.
He came to Texas after finishing St. John’s Prep School in Brooklyn and attended SMU. He later joined his father’s insurance company for a short while, States General. He was walking down the street, rubbing 2 quarters together when he saw the Blue Cross Blue Shield Building in downtown Dallas. He noticed they didn’t work on weekends so he applied for a job. As destiny would have it, thirty years later, in 1991, he retired from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas as the Vice President of the Claims Division and was very proud to have worked for that company where he made many lasting friendships.
He was Catholic. He was given his last rights the day before his discharge from the hospital and he was forgiven of all his sins. God gave him many blessings and the next day he was taken off of Hospice care for awhile.
He was a good man. He was a happy man and could light up a room with his laughter. He built a log house from the ground up. He could make a decision in a minute. He loved to travel and see the world. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Once while driving through Ogden, Utah, Bill noticed two little girls playing in the hotel parking lot with rocks. His heart went out to these little girls and he and his wife, Beverly, went to the store and bought a lot of toys for them. They took them back to the hotel room where the girls were living with their mother, who worked as the housekeeper. When their mother opened the door and was presented with the gifts, she opened the door wider and they could see a man on the bed that had no legs. The mother yelled to the girls that were taking a bath, “See Sarah, I told you God wouldn’t forget your birthday.” It was a blessing for all and a day everyone that witnessed that evening will always cherish and remember. It was a special blessing for Bill and Beverly to be an instrument of God in this manner.
