Virginia “Gini” McCulloch, age 96, of Frisco, Texas, passed away on Monday, October 17, 2022. She was born in Woodsboro, Texas, on March 12, 1926, to Hertha (Boenig) and Emil Walzel.
Gini came from a large and loving family. Her parents were each one of nine children so she grew up surrounded by many aunts, uncles and cousins. She did genealogy research to document her family history and enjoyed many family reunions and get-togethers over the years.
She met her future husband, Al McCulloch, while they worked at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times. They married in 1953, lived in Corpus for several years where they started a family, then settled in Portland, Texas, in 1961. While raising her family, Gini volunteered for the PTA, as a room mother, and in school functions throughout the years. She was a member of the Portland Garden Club, the Shell Club, the Red Hat Ladies, a canasta group, and loved any excuse to go to the beach or get together with friends.
Gini worked for many years at Bell Whittington Library in the reference department. She loved reading/research and was a natural at helping people find answers to their questions. She instilled her love of reading in her daughters.
Church was always a central part of her life. Gini and Al were active members of First Presbyterian Church in Portland where they volunteered in many capacities and she served as church secretary. They later transferred their membership to First United Methodist Church in Portland.
In 2006, she moved to Frisco, Texas to be close to her daughters and their families. She joined Grace Avenue United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Lydia Group, helped fold church bulletins, and joined her Sunday school class in greeting the returning troops at DFW Airport.
She was not a sports fan but loved watching her grandkids play baseball, soccer, and basketball whether she understood the rules or not. She attended every band concert and marching performance she could.
Gini was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.
She is survived by her daughters, Lisa McDonald and her husband, Barry, and Nancy Wendell and her husband, John; her grandchildren, Tyler Wendell (Dr. Morgan PettyJohn), Brian Wendell (Kayla), Hayden Wendell, Adriene McDonald, and Matthew McDonald (Ashley); her great-grandchildren, Hewitt Or-ngam, Corwin Or-ngam, Finley McDonald, and Sheridan McDonald; her brother, Victor Ray Walzel and his wife Mary Lee; as well as dozens of cousins, nieces, and nephews whom she adored.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Al McCulloch, her brother, Leland Walzel, and her sister, Mildred Horner.
Inurnment will be at La Rosa Cemetery in Woodsboro, Texas, on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 11:00 a.m., to be followed by a luncheon at Faith United Church.
