Vera Mitkaliv Jashko, MD

Vera Smejan Mitkaliv Jashko, M.D. of McKinney, Texas passed away February 22, 2016 at the age of 97.  She was born May 13, 1918 to Matthew Smejan and Elizabeth (Bikovich) Smejan in Borzna, Ukraine.  Vera was born and raised in the Ukraine where her family suffered persecution because her father was a man of the cloth.  They suffered the Stalin Forced Famine in 1932-1933.  She was a medical doctor during World War II working in a military field unit.  In 1949, Vera immigrated to the United States and was a medical technologist at St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago, Illinois until her retirement in 1986. She married Nicholas Jashko on May 7, 1964 in Chicago, Illinois.

Vera is survived by her husband, Nicholas Jashko in McKinney, Texas; children, Ludmilla Lucy Lawnicki and husband Louis also of McKinney, Texas and Victor Edward Mitkal and wife Maryanne of Scottsdale, Arizona; grandchildren, Victor G. Mitkal and wife Jennifer and Louis Nicholas Lawnicki and wife Jennifer; great-grandchildren, Abagail Lawnicki, Oscar Lawnicki, Drake Lawnicki, Nathan Mitkal, and Zachary Mitkal; and a host of other loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Nicholas Mitkaliv, three brothers, and five sisters.

A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 26, 2016 at Genesis Church, 5780 Virginia Parkway, McKinney, Texas 75070.  Interment is to follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas.  The family will receive friends during a visitation on Thursday evening beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas.
