Thurza Elizabeth Small, age 67 of Frisco, Texas, passed away on September 2, 2007 in Frisco. She was born on October 23, 1939 in Jersey City, New Jersey to George and Louise Harriman. Thurza grew up in Ashfield, MA where she attended elementary and high school. She graduated from North Adams State College in 1961 with a teaching degree and went on to receive a Masters Degree and then a CAGS Degree in Individualized Instruction from Fitchburg State College in MA. Thurza taught in Williamsburg, MA for several years and then moved to Cape Cod, MA where she resided in Harwich and taught 6th Grade for ten years. She then spent 18 years in Canaan, NH where both she and her husband Robert taught at Cardigan Mountain School, which is an all boys boarding school. They then moved to Covington, La in 1998 where she first taught at Christ Episcopal School for four years and went on to work for the Center for Development & Learning in Covington as a Learning Specialist, where she served in numerous schools in New Orleans in this capacity. Thurza and Robert moved to Frisco, Texas in 2005 to be with family and belonged to Grace Avenue United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Choir and worked with Youth Groups. She received a significant honor in 2006 by having a room at Cardigan Mountain School dedicated to her as “a teacher who truly made a difference.” Thurza is survived by her husband, Robert Small of Frisco, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Trevor Worcester of Frisco, Texas; son, Christopher Small of Mesa, Arizona; granddaughter, Olivia Worcester; brothers, George Harriman & wife, Linda of Abington, Massachusetts, Richard Harriman and wife, Kristin of Cambridge, Massachusetts; sister, Marcia VonDrasek and husband, Joseph of St. Paul, Minnesota and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at Grace Avenue United Methodist Church with Rev. Billy Echols-Richter officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Thurza’s name to Grace Avenue United Methodist Church’s Grand Piano Fund.
