Thelma Rae (Sterling) Griffin, 94, of Prosper, Texas, passed peacefully from this life at her home on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, surrounded by the family she loved so dearly.
Born on February 12, 1932, at her grandparents' home near Rock Hill in Collin County, Texas, Thelma was the cherished daughter of William Ray Sterling and Minnie Esther (Roberson) Sterling. She was raised in the Frisco and Prosper communities, where generations of her family helped shape the rich history of Collin County.
Thelma's early education began in the one-room Bowlby School west of McKinney, where she attended first and second grades. She later moved to Frisco to live with her Roberson grandparents and continue her education. An exceptional student, she excelled academically and was advanced beyond the fourth grade because of her outstanding scholastic achievement. She graduated from Frisco High School as Salutatorian of her class, a distinction that reflected the intelligence, discipline, and quiet determination that characterized her throughout life.
After graduation, Thelma began her career in Dallas, first with Higginbotham's Department Store, then as a page at the Federal Reserve Bank, and later with the Baptist Relief and Annuity Board. Although she enjoyed her accounting career, her greatest calling was caring for her family.
On June 30, 1951, Thelma eloped with the love of her life, Robert Joseph Griffin, and they were married at First Methodist Church in Ardmore, Oklahoma, accompanied by close friends as witnesses. Their marriage of sixty-three years was a beautiful example of love, devotion, faith, and partnership until Bob's passing in 2014.
While Bob served his country in the United States Air Force, Thelma continued working to support their young family. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, hard work, and service, raising four sons who were the pride and joy of her life.
A lifelong Methodist, Thelma quietly demonstrated her faith through kindness, generosity, and unwavering devotion to her family. She was known for her gentle spirit, remarkable memory, steady wisdom, and ability to make every family gathering feel like home. Whether balancing the family finances, offering thoughtful advice, or celebrating the milestones of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, she gave of herself with grace and unconditional love.
Thelma is survived by her four sons: Joe Tim Griffin and his wife Patti Jean (Cornelius) Griffin of Rockwall, Texas; Sterling Christie Griffin of Prosper, Texas; Robert Edgar "Bo" Griffin II and his wife Selina Joy (O'Dell) Griffin of Prosper, Texas; and Barry Dale Griffin and his wife Nancy Griffin of Boca Raton, Florida.
She is also survived by her beloved siblings: Homer Glen Sterling and his wife Catherine Rose (Holley) Sterling of Lewisville, Texas; Billy Pat Sterling and his wife Patricia Ann (Green) Sterling of Prosper, Texas; and Nancy Ellen (Sterling) Tyler and her husband Randy Gene Tyler of Dallas, Texas.
Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Robert Joseph "Rob" Martinson II and his wife Mandy (Lown) Martinson of Spokane, Washington; Alisha Nicole Hopkins and her husband Roy Hopkins; Danny Teague Griffin and his wife Lindsay (Dowd) Griffin of Prosper, Texas; Holly Rene Torres of Florida; Timothy Tate Griffin and his wife Monica Griffin; and Clifford Colby Griffin and his wife Brittany Griffin of Little Elm, Texas.
She was further blessed with twelve treasured great-grandchildren: Felix Barry Fuerst, Mirah Torres, Shiloh Martinson, Tristian Robert Martinson, Adalyn Kate Griffin, Radha Torres, Griffin Hopkins, Langston Reid Griffin, Levi Clifford Griffin, Kowen Colt Griffin, Patrick "Putt" Torres, and Tucker Knox Griffin.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Joseph Griffin; her parents, William Ray and Minnie Esther Sterling; her brother, James Murel Sterling; her granddaughter, Amanda Griffin; and her grandparents, Henry Lawson and Narissa Alice (Goodnight) Sterling, and Otis Herbert and America Ellen (Shelley) Roberson.
Thelma's life spanned nearly a century of remarkable change, yet she remained firmly rooted in the values that mattered most—faith in God, love of family, honesty, humility, and hard work. She witnessed the transformation of Collin County from rural farming communities into thriving cities, all while remaining deeply connected to the land, people, and traditions that shaped her life.
Those who knew Thelma will remember her quiet strength, unwavering faith, gentle smile, and the unconditional love she extended to everyone around her. Her influence lives on in the generations she nurtured, and her legacy will continue through the family she loved so completely.
Her family finds comfort in knowing she has been reunited with Bob, the love of her life, and that her example of grace, perseverance, and devotion will remain an enduring blessing to all who knew her.
The family will receive friends during a Visitation Wednesday, July 1, 2026, from 6PM to 8PM, at Turrentine Jackson Morrow Funeral Home-Frisco, 8520 Main St, Frisco, TX, 75033.
