Steven Robert Van Gorp

Steven Robert Van Gorp was born on November 10,1959 in St. Louis, Missouri and went to his eternal rest on June 21, 2021 in Plano, Texas.Steve lived his early years in St. Louis with his parents, Alfred and Laura Ann and sister Donna.  Upon graduation from Washington University in St. Louis Steve pursued his career in Architecture in different places across the United States.  Steve worked for architectural firms in Florida, Washington DC, and New York. He taught architecture and design studio at Lehigh University in Bethlehem Pennsylvania.

Steve moved back to St Louis in the early 90s, where he met his partner, Jerry Catabijan. In the early 90’s, Steve traded his busy life as an architect for a more simple one and traveled to Martha’s Vineyard with his life partner Jerry Catabijan, where he happily worked in a variety of island jobs, innkeeper, leaf raker. He helped with designing the New Black Dog Bakery in Tisbury MA. He eventually became Island Housing Authority director for Dukes County MA. Even though he and Jerry Loved their life in the Vineyard, his career called him to Las Vegas NV. There he worked as a Planner Coordinator and eventually became Assistant Planning Director, as well as being an adjunct teacher of planning at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.  Steve was a member of AICP as well as many other planning and Architecture organizations. He retired from the city in 2011.

Steve had a great love for Architecture. His hobbies were collecting architecture books of all kinds, drawings, paintings, , and unique vintage objects. Steve loved dogs and over the years he and Jerry rescued, adopted, and loved dogs of all shapes and sizes.

Steve was preceded in death  by his parents Alfred and Laura Ann. He is survived by his life partner and Husband Jerry Catabijan, his sister Donna, Wampler (Pat)his Uncle David Ressler and Mel (Judy) Ressler. His nephews Keith (Natalie) and Zak (fiancée Emily Muren) Sister-in-laws Lorna Calvin (Boyd), Pat Catabijan, and Karen Catabijan along with nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his much beloved dogs Henry and Baxter and cat, Maxwell.

A celebration of his life is planned for a later date and his ashes will be taken to Martha’s Vineyard where he had always planned to return with Jerry.
