On Tuesday, October 25th, Steven Houghtalen, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many passed away peacefully at his home in Allen, TX. He was seventy-three, born to Elizabeth and Howard Houghtalen in Binghamton, NY. It was there that Steve met Andrea. From the time that they met Steve and Andrea were inseparable. They were married in 1971 and raised three beautiful daughters.
Steve was the loving father to Denise Capurso, Kristen Turner and Stacie Van Voorst. He poured out his love to his adoring grandchildren, Leah Capurso, Catherine Capurso, Ana Turner, Ella Van Voorst and Luke Van Voorst. They will all cherish the memories of his jokes and stories of the adventures with his brothers and sisters from his childhood. Steve’s siblings and their spouses Cheryl Larkin (Jim Larkin), Jean Hile (Steve Hile), Robert Houghtalen (Judy Houghtalen), Don Houghtalen (Jennifer Houghtalen), Tom Houghtalen (Jan Houghtalen) and Terry Meredith (Bill Meredith) will remember those stories as well as they reflect on Steve’s life. Also, his sons-in-law Stephen Capurso, Billy Turner and Kelvin Van Voorst will have the lasting legacy of Steve’s mentorship on being loving, strong, principled fathers and husbands.
Steve spent his entire professional career with IBM leading global engineering teams. In the summers Steve would welcome family and friends to his and Andrea’s summer home on Page Lake in New Milford, PA for boat rides around the lake or golfing with friends at courses nearby. Nights at the lake were spent around the campfire telling jokes and creating memories. Steve was an active member of the St. Jude Catholic community in Allen, TX. He had a passion for helping those who were less fortunate through his volunteer work with the homeless at the Samaritan Inn in McKinney, TX and supporting victims of domestic violence at Hope’s Door in Plano, TX. Many lives were positively impacted by Steve’s loving and kind support.
The family will hold a private mass at St. Jude Catholic Church to celebrate Steve’s life. Anyone wishing to honor Steve’s lifelong commitment to family and community can make a donation to Hope’s Door New Beginnings Center in Plano, TX.
