Sophia Mae Nelson of McKinney, Texas entered eternal rest on May 14, 2020 at the age of 88.

Sophia was the fourth daughter born on June 6, 1931 to Gilbert and Nola Nelson in Ardmore, Oklahoma in Carter County.  She joined church at an early age in 1936 at Mosley Chapel in Dallas, Texas under the pastoral guidance of Reverend R. R. Northcutt.

She attended schools in Dallas, Texas. Sophia attended first grade at Wheatley Elementary, second grade in Ardmore, Oklahoma at Dunbar Elementary and third grade through high school at E. S. Doty High School in McKinney, Texas graduating in May 1948.  Sophia was an outstanding student in math and sciences throughout her school career.

Sophia was chosen as an outstanding student from Doty High School in math and sciences and was taken to Southern Methodist University to be tested for a special program for minorities of Indian Native and African American background to compete for scholarships in math and science areas.  As a top scorer on the assessment, she was granted a scholarship of study and was accepted to enroll at the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Phoenix, Arizona from September 1950 to December 20, 1953, graduating earlier than expected.  Her career began at City County Hospital in McKinney, Texas and later the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in McKinney, Texas where she held several supervisory and management positions.  From February 1954 to August 1965, she was at the Veteran’s Medical Center in Bonham, Texas until her retirement on November 18, 1978.

Sophia never married, nor did she have children.  She  is survived by her nieces, Madelyn Boykin and husband, Jack Boykin of Rockwall, Texas, Sheron Johnson and husband, Michael of Dallas, Texas, and Dianna Rogers of McKinney, Texas; nephews, Ronald Rogers and wife, Patsy of Elk Grove, California and Paul Robinson; special friend, Lois Walker of McKinney, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Nola Nelson; sisters, Alene Johnson, Pauline Robinson and Mary Smiley; brothers-in-law, Allie C. Johnson and Sandy Smiley; and nephew, Allie C. Johnson, Jr.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 20, 2020, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas. In support of our local, state, and federal govt including CDC directives and to protect the physical health, safety and well-being of our community, only a limited number of invited guests will be allowed to attend the Funeral Service.

The service will also be live streamed on Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. on the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Facebook page and a recorded video will be available following the funeral service on Sophia's obituary page.

However, those who would like to honor Sophia and show their support to her family may come to the funeral home where ample parking is available. While you remain in your vehicle, you may watch the live streamed service on your personal device (laptop, tablet or smartphone) or listen through a designated FM radio channel.
