Shing Mao

May 21 1935 - Jun 13 2025

Dr. Shing Mao of Fairview, Texas passed away on June 13, 2025 at the age of 90 years old. He was the oldest son of General Ping-Wen Mao and Chun-Liang Mao and was born on May 21, 1935 in China.

He was an academically gifted student and graduated from National Taiwan University with a degree in Electrical Engineering and then won scholarships to study in the United States.  He received a Master’s Degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and then completed his doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University.

Shing married his beautiful wife Chung Fong Lau on August 14, 1960 in Palo Alto, California. They had five children and lived in California, Boston, Massachusetts, Dallas, Texas, Singapore and Taiwan because of his work. He worked at Raytheon while living in Boston and worked on LED Technology with Texas Instruments while in Singapore and Taiwan. He became a leader in development of LED technology and was the Chairman of Lite-On Inc. corporation from 1988-2000 and later served as a Director and Executive Board Member for Diodes. Following retirement, he continued to be a consultant for many industries.

Shing is survived by his wife, Chung Fong Mao of Fairview, Texas; daughter, Alice Mao Brams and son-in-law, Matthew Brams of Houston, Texas; daughter, Betty Mao of Fairview, Texas; daughter, Cathy Mao of Hermosa Beach, California; son, Edward Mao and daughter-in-law, Carol Chang Mao of Fairview, Texas; daughter-in-law, Daphne Jeang Mao of Fairview, Texas; grandson, Evan Brams of Houston, Texas; grandsons, Marcus Mao, Andrew Mao and Justen Mao of Fairview, Texas; granddaughter, Hannah Mao of Fairview; sister, Gloria Chow and brother-in-law, James Chow of Carlsbad, California; sister, Zhi Mao Long and brother-in-law You-Cun Long of Monterrey Park, California; and sister, Ling Mao Gu of Fremont, California and sister-in-law, Charlotte Mao.  He has multiple loving nieces and nephews who are living all over the country.

Sadly, he was recently preceded in death by his son, David Mao MBA, JD; brother, Morgan Mao; sister, An Mao; and brother-in-law Gary Gu. He will be fondly remembered for his leadership, warmth, intelligence and sense of humor. He loved taking pictures of his children and grandchildren and sharing tales of his youth and tips for life.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 13, 2025 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013. The service will also be live streamed at the following link: celebrationoflife.tv/blog/shing-mao . The family will receive guests for a visitation one hour prior to the service.
