Hortense (Sara Hortense) Weir Smith, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend died peacefully on May 27, 2017 in Frisco, Texas.
She was born on March 3, 1920 in Garland, Texas to Samuel Robert Weir and Ilma Hortense (Beaver) Weir. She was the granddaughter of one of the pioneering families of Garland (Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Beaver).
She was a graduate of Southern Methodist University where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, then married Robert Earl Smith. They were married for 66 years until he preceded her in death in 2008. She was a longtime resident of Kettering, Ohio until 2005 when they moved to Leawood, Kansas. She relocated to Frisco, Texas in 2011. Hortense was a devoted wife and mother, who loved her family and friends. She enjoyed the fun of playing bridge, shopping and was devoted to her church. She was a resource for the early history of Garland, Texas and its historic district around 11th street.
She greatly enjoyed Siesta Key, Florida winters from 1978 till 2005 and was an active part of the Tortuga community enjoying their activities and made many lasting friendships there.
She is survived by her children, Michael (Charlene) Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sally (Sten) Williams of Frisco, Texas, Douglas (Rita) Smith of The Woodlands, Texas, and Bradley (Suzanne) Smith of Leawood, Kansas; 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law Tom (Marilou) Smith, Larry (Mary Lou) Smith of Dayton, Ohio; sisters-in-law, Gloria Smith of Dayton, Ohio and Jeanne McEwan of St Louis, Missouri.
She was predeceased by her sister, Virginia Weir Brown of Boise, Idaho.
A funeral mass will be held at St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Frisco, Texas on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 2:30 PM. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
