Samuel Dwayne Houston

Samuel Dwayne Houston of Mesquite, Texas passed away on July 13, 2021 at the age of 94. He was born on October 23, 1926 to Cecil Leslie and Hazel (Strickland) Houston in Lisbon, Texas. Sam graduated from North Dallas High School and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Sam was a self-made man who owned Tennessee Liquified Gas in Millington, Tennessee from 1949 to 1956. He sold the business and moved the family back to Texas in 1956. After returning he went to work for Robertshaw Controls from which he retired in 1990. He was a direct descendent of Sam Houston, the President of the Republic of Texas. Sam and his wife, Nita loved to travel and visited every state except Alaska. Sam’s main hobby was golf.

He is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Black and husband, Jim; four grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Sam was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Nita Houston; son, Terry Houston; parents, Hazel and Cecil Houston, Sr.; brother, Cecil Houston, Jr.; and sister, Dorothy Bucheit.

A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, July 19, 2021 at Ridgeview Memorial Park, 2525 Central Expressway North in Allen. The family will receive friends during a visitation from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 2525 Central Expressway North in Allen. Officiating will be Ray Hunter with a eulogy by great grandson, Jacob Knox.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to The Church of Christ at Christian Care Center, 1000 Wiggins Parkway, Mesquite, Texas 75150.
