IN LOVING MEMORY

Samuel Raymond McHorse

Feb 17 1947 - Nov 02 2024

Samuel Raymond McHorse was born on February 17, 1947, in San Antonio, Texas. Sam spent his childhood in San Antonio, Texas and Fairbanks, Alaska as his dad served in the US Air Force. He graduated High School in 1965 from Highlands High School in San Antonio and received a Bachelor of Science in Technology from the University of Houston.

With great pride, Sam served his country in the United States Navy, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer, with 20 years of active and reserve duty service. Days at sea in the Mediterranean on USS Forrestal were a highlight of his military career. As a communications expert, Sam was awarded the Navy’s Achievement medal for establishing the ground to air communication system during the rescue mission in Tunisia. His career path led him into software engineering with Texas Instruments, Accenture, and various contract positions.  In retirement, he kept his programming skills sharp by studying C++, Pearl, Visual Basic, and other languages just for fun. As an avid student of the Bible, Sam loved to engage in class discussions at Prestonwood and Mobberly Baptist Church.  Whether taking on an electrical project, using his carpentry skills to build a piece of furniture, tending to his koi pond, or repairing a car, Sam was skilled at the work to which he put his hands. Saturday afternoons in the fall were spent cheering on the Texas Longhorns with a remote in one hand and a phone in the other ready to call his son Gary with the next big play.

On Saturday, November 2, 2024, Sam passed peacefully with family by his side. He was preceded in death by his parents Marion McHorse and Mary Pearl McHorse; his wife Velma McHorse of 25 years; his brother Roger McHorse; his Aunt Sudie Grace Chambers; his Uncles Samuel Carroll Werner and James Nelson Werner.  Sam is survived by his son Gary McHorse and wife Kelly of San Antonio, Texas; his daughter Lyn Cole and husband Johnny of San Antonio; his grandchildren Brian McHorse, Austin McHorse, Colton McHorse, Adam Cole, and Marli Cole; his sisters Pat Meza and Sudie Varney; along with Velma’s children and grandchildren.
