Russell Wood Cunningham

Russell Wood Cunningham, age 82, of McKinney, Texas passed away peacefully on February 3, 2011. He was born on September 9, 1928, in Morgantown, West Virginia, to Charles and Ethel (Wood) Cunningham. Russell was a previous resident of Lewes, Delaware for the past seventeen years. He retired from the Virginia State Corporation Commission in 1993 where he served as Senior Hearing Examiner for thirteen years. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Law Degree from West Virginia University. Russell proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, where he flew 105 scouting missions during the Korean War, receiving the Bronze Star and was a past Commander of the Delaware Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association. He was a past President of the Angola by the Bay Homeowners Association and a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He was a member of the Bethel United Methodist Church of Lewes, Delaware. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Monta Sue Traugh Cunningham. They met at West Virginia University where Russ proclaimed to his friends “I am going to marry that girl” on the first night that they met. He is survived by his three sons, Jeffrey R. Cunningham of Richmond, Virginia, David C. Cunningham and wife Barbara of McKinney, Texas, and Gregory B. Cunningham and wife Ally of Jessup, Maryland; four granddaughters, Lauren R. Cunningham and husband Patrick Headly of Richmond, Virginia, Kelli N. Cunningham of McKinney, Texas, Kimberly C. and husband Jeff Travis of McKinney, Texas, and Erin L. Cunningham of Jessup, Maryland; three grandsons, Sean C. Cunningham of Richmond, Virginia, Tyler C. Cunningham of McKinney, Texas and Ryan R. Cunningham of Jessup, Maryland; and three great-grandchildren, Colton J., Jordan E., and Emerson A. Travis of McKinney, Texas. The family would like to acknowledge the caring staff at the Tunnell Cancer Center in Lewes Delaware and the staffs of Emeritus at Stonebridge Ranch and Compassionate Care Hospice for the loving care they provided Russ during his brief time here in Texas. The family suggests memorial contributions to Compassionate Care Hospice, 1575 Heritage Drive, McKinney, TX 75069. A celebration of Russ’s life will be take place in Lewes Delaware at a later date.
