Romayne Louis Toy, a longtime resident of Glen Ellyn, Illinois passed away peacefully on January 17, 2023 in McKinney, Texas at the age of ninety-three. She was born in New York City and grew up in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan. When she was twenty, she moved with her family to Port Washington on Long Island. Romayne received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Hunter College and worked at New York Life Insurance Company. She loved music, knitting, gardening, and cooking. She was a board member of the Youth Symphony of DuPage for more than forty years. She belonged to the Wooly Knitters and knit helmet liners for the military and hats, scarves and mittens for children in shelters. Her favorite place was Clayton, New York in the Thousand Islands, where she spent nearly every summer since childhood. Some of the most memorable moments for her children and grandchildren were from summers spent at her cottage - swimming in the St. Lawrence River, attending the annual strawberry festival, baking apple pies, and going on family outings.
Romayne is preceded in death by her parents, Pak and Dorothee Louis, her husband of thirty-four years, Wing Noon Toy and her brother Ronald A. Louis. She is survived by her three children, Liane Tsai (Chris) of Plano, TX, Arthur Toy (Emily) of Parker, TX, and Sue-lin Chao (James) of Naperville, IL, and seven grandchildren.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Youth Symphony of DuPage, the American Heart Association, or the Hawn Memorial Library in Clayton, NY. A memorial service is planned for later this summer in Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
