Robert Weldon Conaway

Jun 09 1939 - Jan 29 2022

Robert Weldon Conaway of Carrollton, Texas passed away on January 29th, 2022. He was born on June 9, 1939 to Ottie Rascoe Conaway and Margaret Kennedy in Abilene, Texas. Robert married Shirley Mae Blythe on May 16, 2004. He was a member of St. Luke Episcopal Church.

Robert is survived by his wife, Shirley Conaway of Carrollton, Texas; sons, Brad Conaway and wife, Lorena of Anna, Texas and Gregg Conaway and wife, Krista of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Keegan Conaway, Darby Conaway, Brittany Rich, Cody Rich and Shera Marie Conaway; sister, Susie Vaughn and husband, Jim; brother-in-law, Jim Privett; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Judy Privett.

Bob was born and raised in Abilene, Texas where he attended both Abilene High School and Hardin-Simmons University. It was in West Texas that he first fell in love with the game of tennis. After college, he spent a few years in the corporate world working for General Electric but he would later pursue an opportunity to be a Tennis Pro. His coaching career would span over forty years and take him to clubs in Arizona, California, and back to Texas. During this time, he was able to coach, counsel, and befriend countless numbers of students. He taught people of all ages and all walks of life the skills of the game with patience, humor, and wisdom. Always a friend, he stayed in contact with most of them until the day he died. Bob was not only a great coach, but he was also an avid player. He would compete with his friends and play in any father-son tournaments with his sons.

A true Texan, Bob loved all things western. He was proud that the Conaway’s are a Texas First Family dating back to 1846 when The Republic of Texas officially became The State of Texas. From the music to the culture, he was happiest in boots and his favorite Stetson. He loved going to the rodeo, the Fort Worth Stockyards and he even took the time to learn how to ride and rope. But by far, his favorite activity was to take his wife Shirley boot-scootin'.

When he wasn't playing tennis or out cutting a rug with Shirley, he loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandkids. Better known as Grandpop, he was a loyal supporter and their biggest fan. Whether for tennis, volleyball, basketball, or marching band, Bob was always there to cheer them on. There was nothing in the world he loved more than his family.

Throughout his life, Bob came in contact with endless numbers of people and left a happy memory with each and every one of them. Texas will miss him.
