Richard William Hemingway, age 96, of Dallas, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at Highland Springs in Dallas, Texas. He was born November 24, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan to the late William and Iva (Wildfang) Hemingway. Richard married Vera Cecilia Eck on September 12, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan.
Richard was recognized for excellence in law education. After graduating from the University of Colorado (BBA) and from the School of Law at Southern Methodist University at the top of his class, he earned his Master of Laws degree from the University of Michigan. After initially practicing law at Fulbright, Crooker, Freeman, Bates & Jaworski, Richard taught law at the University of Houston, Baylor, Southern Methodist University, Texas Tech University, where he became a Paul W. Horn professor in 1972, and the University of Oklahoma, where he served as the Eugene Kuntz professor of oil, gas and natural resources law.
Richard was the author of two books: "The Law of Oil and Gas" in 1971, and "West's Texas Forms (Mines and Minerals)," in 1977. He also served with the United States Air Force from 1945 to 1947.
Raising his family in the Lutheran Church, Richard was dedicated to his family; taking the time between semesters to take long family vacations driving, camping, and exploring across the country.
Richard was survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Steven Rushton of Kerrville, Texas; son, Richard A. Hemingway of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Stephanie Schiefer and husband, Calvin, Michael Neumann, Jr. and Evan Poteet; niece, Delores Hansmann and husband, Jerome; and great grandchildren, Aidan Schiefer and Alice Schiefer. Richard was preceded in death by his loving wife of 75 years, Vera Cecilia (Eck) Hemingway of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Margaret Poteet and daughter-in-law, Margaret Hemingway.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Friday, February 16, 2024 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
