Richard H. Popkes of McKinney, Texas passed away on June 11, 2016 at the age of 90. He was born on March 23, 1926 to Herman and Mary (Bronlewee) Popkes in Buffalo Center, Iowa. Richard married Patsy Marie Lee on September 28, 1952 in Gainesville, Texas. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Richard enjoyed his work and was a craftsman and loved to build things with wood. He was a Midwestern man with Midwestern roots and values, always telling a great story. Richard enjoyed traveling and loved driving cars. He was always talking about how many miles he had traveled. Richard was a member of the Million Mile Club for flying. He was very much a family man and was very proud that he always made all of his families milestones from graduation, marriages, etc.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Patsy Marie Popkes of McKinney, Texas; daughter, Kandy Friday and husband Ray of Falls Church, Virginia; granddaughter, Nichole Friday of San Francisco, California; grandson, Jason Friday of Falls Church, Virginia; nieces, Wendy Popkes and husband John of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Jan Larson of Allen, Texas, Myrna Diekman and husband Bob of Alguna, Iowa; nephew, David Kiewiet and wife Jan of Buffalo Center, Iowa; and numerous other loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leonar Popkes; and sisters, Lenora Kiewiet and Cathren Olson.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel in Allen, Texas. Inurnment will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 16, 2016 at Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Prkwy, Dallas, Texas 75211.
