IN LOVING MEMORY

Richard Gilbert Light

Jun 13 1943 - Sep 01 2025

Richard Gilbert Light, age 82, passed away September 1, 2025, in McKinney, Texas.  He was born on June 13, 1943, in Olean, New York, to his loving parents Gilbert Jasper Light and Floris (Hintz) Light.

Richard graduated from Friendship High School in New York in 1961. The very next day, he enlisted in the United States Navy.

Richard was selected for the Navy Enlisted Scientific Education Program (NESEP) and attended Cornell University, where he trained in submarine navigation. During his naval service, he completed eight patrols and spent nearly two years beneath the ocean’s surface. His assignments took him under the Arctic ice, across the Mediterranean Sea, over the equator multiple times, and into position during the tense days of the Cuban Missile Crisis. He loved his time in the submarine service and remained proud of it throughout his life, often saying that “everyone should do it.”

On October 7, 1967, Richard married the love of his life, Doris Anne McDermott. Together they raised two daughters, Lisa and Jennifer. After leaving the Navy in 1969, he began a long career with Collins Radio, later Rockwell International, where he worked in building and supporting data centers until his retirement about twelve years ago.

In retirement, Richard enjoyed grilling outdoors, sharing meals and laughter with family and friends. He also played golf occasionally, though he joked about not playing very well. He was a proud member of the Submarine Club of Collin County and treasured the friendships and camaraderie he found there.

Richard is survived by his wife, Doris Light, of Fairview, Texas; his daughters, Lisa Edge (Howard “Butch”), of Allen, Texas, and Jennifer Light, of Fairview, Texas; grandchildren, Shelby and Sean; brother, Jack Light (Barbara), of Portville, New York; and many relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Floris Light.

A Memorial Mass to honor his life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 11, 2025, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1515 North Greenville Avenue, Allen, Texas 75002.
