Porfirio Rangel, age 90, of Gunter, Texas, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2026. Porfirio was born in Mexico on September 15, 1935 to Francisco Rangel and Narcisa Vasquez.
Known to his friends as Pilo, and lovingly known to his family as Tio Pilo or Apa, Porfirio left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
In 1978, Pilo left Mexico and came to the United States to work for Dr. Bounds as a ranch hand and farmer. Six months later, after beginning to build a new life, he brought his family from Mexico to join him. What began as a journey in search of opportunity became a life built through sacrifice, determination, and hard work for the family he loved.
For the next 27 years, the ranch became much more than a place of work for Pilo—it became a way of life. His days were spent on horseback, working cattle, mending fences, tending the land, and doing whatever needed to be done to keep the ranch going. He knew the cattle, the horses, the land, and the work that came with it. Long days, hard work, and dirt on his boots were simply part of life, and he took great pride in it. His love for horses, cattle, and ranch life stayed with him long after he retired in 2005.
Above all, Pilo was a faithful servant of God. His faith was not simply something he spoke about, but something reflected in the way he lived, worked, and loved his family. He trusted in the Lord throughout his life and leaves behind an example of faith and devotion for his family to carry forward.
Whether he was tinkering with something in the shed, tending to his garden and chickens in the backyard, or sitting with family and sharing stories from the old days, he had a way of bringing comfort and joy to those around him. His stories, his wisdom, and the simple way he enjoyed life created memories his family will hold onto for generations.
Though he will be deeply missed, his family finds comfort in knowing that after a long and faithful life, Pilo is now at home with the Lord.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maria Rangel, son, Jaime Rangel, grandchildren, Alex Rangel and wife, Paula, Karissa Dalke and husband, Marc,
great-grandchildren, Preston Wagoner and Gabriel Rangel and many extended family members and friends.
Porfirio was preceded in death by his grandson, Giovanni Rangel, his nephews, Eleno Mercado and Adolfo Rodriquez, his siblings, Julia, Leandra, Paula, Irene, and Ambrosio.
A visitation will be held at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow on Friday, September 11, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A rosary will be conducted at 6:30 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 14, 2026 at Turrentine- Jackson-Morrow, 300 West Pecan Street, Gunter, Texas 75058. Interment will follow at Gunter Cemetery.

Porfirio Rangel, de 90 años de Gunter, Texas, falleció el martes 8 de septiembre de 2026. Porfirio nació en México el 15 de septiembre de 1935, hijo de Francisco Rangel y Narcisa Vásquez.
Conocido por sus amigos como Pilo, y cariñosamente llamado por su familia Tío Pilo o Apá, Porfirio dejó una huella imborrable en todos los que tuvieron el privilegio de conocerlo.
En 1978, Pilo dejó México y llegó a Estados Unidos para trabajar con el Dr. Bounds como ranchero y agricultor. Seis meses más tarde, tras haber comenzado a construir una nueva vida, trajo a su familia desde México para reunirse con él. Lo que empezó como un viaje en busca de oportunidades se convirtió en una vida construida a base de sacrificio, determinación y trabajo duro por la familia que amaba.
Durante los siguientes 27 años, el rancho se convirtió en mucho más que un lugar de trabajo para Pilo: se transformó en una forma de vida. Pasaba los días a caballo, manejando el ganado, reparando cercas, cuidando la tierra y haciendo todo lo necesario para mantener el rancho en marcha. Conocía bien el ganado, los caballos, el terreno y las labores que todo ello conllevaba. Las jornadas largas, el trabajo duro y el polvo en las botas eran simplemente parte de la vida, algo de lo que se
sentía profundamente orgulloso. Su amor por los caballos, el ganado y la vida en el rancho perduró mucho tiempo después de jubilarse en 2005.
Ante todo, Pilo fue un fiel servidor de Dios. Su fe no era algo de lo que simplemente hablaba, sino algo que se reflejaba en su forma de vivir, de trabajar y de amar a su familia. Confió en el Señor a lo largo de su vida y deja un ejemplo de fe y devoción para que su familia lo continúe.
Ya fuera que estuviera trasteando con algo en el cobertizo, cuidando su jardín y sus gallinas en el patio trasero, o sentado con la familia compartiendo historias de antaño, él tenía una manera especial de brindar consuelo y alegría a quienes lo rodeaban. Sus historias, su sabiduría y la sencillez con la que disfrutaba de la vida crearon recuerdos que su familia atesorará durante generaciones.
Aunque se le extrañará profundamente, su familia encuentra consuelo al saber que, tras una vida larga y fiel, Pilo está ahora en casa con el Señor.
Le sobreviven su esposa durante 57 años, Maria Rangel; su hijo, Jaime Rangel; sus nietos, Alex Rangel (y su esposa, Paula) y Karissa Dalke (y su esposo, Marc); sus bisnietos, Preston Wagoner y Gabriel Rangel; así como numerosos familiares y amigos.
Le precedieron en la muerte su nieto, Giovanni Rangel; sus sobrinos, Eleno Mercado y Adolfo Rodriquez; y sus hermanos, Julia, Leandra, Paula, Irene y Ambrosio.
El velorio tendrá lugar en Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow el viernes 11 de septiembre de 2026, de 6:00 p. m. a 8:00 p. m. Se rezará el rosario a las 6:30 p. m.
El servicio funerario se llevará a cabo el lunes 14 de septiembre de 2026 a las 10:00 a. m. en Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow, ubicado en 300 West Pecan Street, Gunter, Texas 75058. El sepelio se realizará posteriormente en el cementerio de Gunter.
