Nelda Fay Herrin Schulte was born September 4, 1942 in Dallas, Texas to L.W. “Bud” Herrin and Edna Pearl Killion Herrin. She passed away on January 17, 2023 in Farmersville, Texas at the age of 80.
Nelda lived her school age years in Garland, Texas. She attended Garland High School where she was a member of the Biology Club, Future Homemakers of America, and the Dashing Debs drill team. Nelda graduated from Garland High School in 1961.
Nelda always loved working with children. As a member of the First Baptist Church of Garland she was active in Vacation Bible School and Girls in Action (GA’s). She was a long time teacher’s aide working with mentally and physically challenged children. She worked at the Loving Care Center in Garland, Garland Independent School District and Richardson Independent School District, where she retired from.
Nelda married James Lee “Jimmy” Schulte on June 5, 1981. They started out in Garland, Texas, and later they moved to Lavon, Texas. They enjoyed traveling together and getting together with family and friends. Many a Friday or Saturday night was spent playing cards, dominoes, farkyl, or left-right-center.
Nelda is survived by her husband, Jimmy Schulte of Lavon; son, Paul Hawthorne, Jr. and wife Cathy of Llano; son, Dan Hawthorne and wife Polly of Gilmer; grandchildren, Robert Hawthorne and wife Gwen, Cameron Hawthorne and wife Emily, Dusty Porter, Rusty Porter and wife Amanda, and Kallie Grant; great-grandchildren, Adeline and Harper Hawthorne, Austin LaCross, Aidan and Ethan Summers, Hayley and Averie McLaughlin and John Grant; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, James “Jim” Herrin.
A Celebration of Life/Memorial/Visitation will be held by the family at the Charles W. Smith and Sons Funeral Home in Lavon, Texas.
