Mildred Armstrong Bennett

Mildred Armstrong Bennett of McKinney, Texas passed away October 27, 2018, at the age of 103.  She was born August 23, 1915, to Robert Armstrong and Florence (Moncrief) Armstrong in Cleburne, Texas.  Mildred graduated from Cleburne High School in 1934.  She married Dean Bennett on August 27, 1939 in Cleburne, Texas.  Mildred received a Bachelor’s Degree from Texas State College for Women (now known as Texas Women University). She received a Master’s Degree from North Texas State Teachers College in Denton, Texas. Mildred worked in the Brownsboro ISD from 1938-1939, before teaching in the Big Spring ISD for 15 years. She moved to McKinney where she started teaching in the fall of 1954.  Mildred taught third grade for four years. She then moved to high school where she taught Typing II, Shorthand I and II, and Secretarial Training. She had many students compete at the district and state levels.  Mildred retired from McKinney ISD in the spring of 1978 after teaching 24 years in the district. Her professional organizations included, Texas State Teachers Association, Classroom Teacher Association, Secretarial Association and the Collin County Retired Teachers Association where she served as the health and finance officer and the association’s historian. Mildred was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in McKinney. In 2002, The Dean and Mildred Bennett Elementary School was dedicated in their honor.

She is survived by her sons, Michael Bennett of Forney, Texas and David Bennett and wife, Cathy of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Barry Bennett and wife, Susan of College Station, Texas; great-grandchildren, Colton Bennett and Kylie Bennett; and numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Bennett, parents, brothers, Herbert Armstrong, Bob Armstrong, J.C. Armstrong and sisters, Eva Corse and Lucille Orr.

The family wishes to thank Mildred’s caregivers, Nancy Dotson, Debbie Bell and Rhonda Young.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen, Texas with Rev. June Franck officiating. Interment is to follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Monday evening from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
