Mary Will Craig

Mary Will Craig, age 93, of McKinney, Texas, passed away on September 3, 2011. She was born April 18, 1918, in Athens, Texas, to George W. and Savilla (Gore) Stone. Mary married Rupert T. Craig on October 30, 1938, in Athens, Texas. Mary was a homemaker and proudly raised her family but she was also very active in her community as a volunteer. She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of McKinney where she not only taught children’s Sunday school but also served on several committees of the official board and became the first woman to be named Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the church. Mary also worked with the Methodist Women, served as group Chairperson, Chairperson of the general groups as well as District Secretary. She became President of Church Women United and a member of their Board of the United Day Nursery. She cared greatly for the welfare of others and steadfastly delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. Mary was very active in the school’s P.T.A. and became Chairperson of High School, City Councils, Area Council, and was District Vice President. She was also the recipient of the Texas Life Membership. In addition to supporting her children’s schools, she became a Campfire Leader and President of the Leaders Council. Mary was equally dedicated to her volunteer work at the Heard Natural Science Museum and Wildlife Sanctuary. She served as both a Charter member of the Volunteer Guild and President of the Guild where her dedication earned her the Miss Bessie Heard Guild Award for Outstanding Service. Mary was also a member and Secretary of the Official board of the museum and received the Heard Special Achievement Award. She was a past member and President of the McKinney Job Corps Community Relations. Additionally she was member, delegate and President of the McKinney City Federation of Women’s Clubs representing the City Federation on the Library Board. She also served as President of the En Avant Club where she was presented the Life Membership Award. Mary also received the honor of having the Mary Will Craig Park named for her after 12 years of service on the McKinney Park Board. She was devoted to her family, her friends and her community. This passion was also extended to her favorite sports teams. Mary was an avid Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Cowboys fan!! Loyalty, commitment and achievement were among the defining characteristics of Mary Craig. She was the embodiment of a life well lived and a soul well loved. She is survived by daughters, Sue Sanders of Nevada, Texas and Mary Massey and husband Jim of Rowlett, Texas; son-in-law, L.B. Eaton and wife Yondi; granddaughters, Melody Riley, Jennifer Massey, Tammie Worthington and husband Robert; grandsons, Chris Sanders and wife Lisa, Kyle Eaton and wife Margaret, and Clifton Massey; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Rupert T. Craig; parents, George and Savilla Stone; daughter, Clara Eaton; grandson, Jeff Eaton; and granddaughter, Sinden Sanders. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 6, 2011, at 2:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, 315 N. Church Street, McKinney, Texas, officiating by Dr. Don F. Renshaw. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Monday evening, from at 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
