Mary Ann Hoffman, 93, of McKinney, Texas, passed away on December 30, 2024.
Mary Ann was born on May 24, 1931, to Peder Christopher Pederson and Amanda Hoaglund in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She graduated from South High School in 1949.
She met handsome United States Air Force Airman First Class, Dan Hoffman, on a blind date while he was on leave. They would correspond weekly by mail until he was honorably discharged in 1955. They married the following year and resided in Minneapolis where they welcomed three daughters. They relocated to Dallas, Texas in 1963 where their 4th daughter was born.
Mary Ann was a homemaker and mother devoted to her four girls. She was a Girl Scout Troop Leader, Room Mother, PTA Treasurer, carpool driver, field trip chaperone, seamstress, hair fixer, and referee to many sisterly spats. She also acted as a bonus mom to many of her children’s friends. The Hoffman house was a place where all the neighborhood kids were welcome. There were so many children playing in the front yard that strangers stopped on more than one occasion to ask if she was running a daycare.
In her late 40’s she reentered the work force as a Special Education aid for Carrollton Farmers Branch ISD and later as a secretary at Taylor Publishing. In 1983, she relocated with her husband to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia where she worked for the Ex-pat Physician. Upon her return to the US, she continued her secretarial work at Xerox until she retired in 1995 to devote more time to her favorite role of Grandmother.
Mary Ann was a kind soul who loved to laugh, socialize and dance. She loved traveling and spending time with her family. She enjoyed sewing, playing games and solving word and math puzzles. She was a devoted friend with an impish smile.
She is survived by daughters, Kathy Smiley and husband, George of Pearland, Texas; Nancy Rowe and husband, Jason of Frisco, Texas; Janie Merle of Royse City, Texas and Carole Gardner and husband, Mike of Allen, Texas; grandchildren, Natalie Fernandez and husband, Rick; Rebecca Smith and husband, Adam, Grayson Gardner and Jacob Smiley; great-grandchildren, Nicolas and Cristian Fernandez and numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog, Roxy.
