Martin Andrew Smith of McKinney, Texas, passed away on September 11, 2022, at the age of 56.
Marty was born on March 29, 1966, to Richard and Frances Smith in Syracuse, New York. He grew up in the village of Marcellus, New York, and graduated from Marcellus High School in 1984, where he played right back on the soccer team and outfield on the baseball team.
He was a 1988 graduate of Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science, and was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. He later earned his MBA at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Marty married Melanie (Peden) on June 25, 1994, and moved to McKinney, Texas, where they raised their two children, Andrew and Emma. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of McKinney.
He began his career in operations and systems engineering at EDS, which later led to IT integration and consulting roles at other Fortune 500 companies. For more than two decades he volunteered with the Habitat for Humanity of Collin County, where he recently was Chairman of the Board. Seeing families receive the keys to their new homes during dedication ceremonies was his favorite part.
Marty was the consummate provider, a loving husband, a guidepost for his children, and a fun-loving friend to many. He loved spending time at the family cottage on Amber Beach and sailing on Otisco Lake, his family’s annual vacation spot.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Melanie Smith of McKinney, Texas; son, Andrew Smith of Dallas; and daughter, Emma Smith of Oklahoma City; brothers, Kevin Smith of Belmont, Massachusetts.; Lynne Smith (Bob) of Venice, Florida.; Jeff Smith (Mary Beth) of Amber Beach, New York; and Brad Smith (Beth) of Tully, New York; mother-in-law, Judi Ware of Marshall, Texas; many loving nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Haley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Fran Smith, and father-in-law, Bobby Ware.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 14, 2022 at First United Methodist Church, 315 North Church Street, McKinney, Texas 75069. The service will also be live streamed by FUMC-McKinney at the following link: https://www.sharingtheheart.org/ceremonies/.
