Martha Chisam Black of Plano, Texas passed away August 17, 2026 at the age of 81. She was born to Woodrow Wilson and Avis (Knowles) Chisam on January 21, 1945 in Huntsville, Alabama.
Martha was born the middle child between two brothers, to a father who worked in the U.S. Postal Service and a homemaker mother. She attended the University of Alabama where she met her future husband, Maurice. She earned a B.S. in social work and began a career in food stamp certification that spanned across Northern Alabama and into Dallas, Texas.
Her joys were her daughters, Susan and Kasie, and her grandson, Charlie, to whom she shared the gentle art of squirrel whispering. She loved Alabama football, traveling, art, good food, reading, and flowers/plants. Her spirit animal was the turtle.
Her kindness and generosity made her a friend to many and the world a better place. You were the better for having known her, and she will be greatly missed.
Martha is survived by her daughter, Susan Jones and husband, Steve of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Kasie Hardy and husband, Charles of Nashville, Tennessee; grandson, Charlie Hardy of Nashville, Tennessee; brother, Mike Chisam and wife, Donna of Alpharetta, Georgia; and sister-in-law, Lera Chisam of Portland, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Black and brother, Sam Chisam.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 5, 2026 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013. The service will also be live streamed at the following link: https://celebrationoflife.tv/blog/martha-chisam-black.
