IN LOVING MEMORY

Mark Artis

Oct 04 1942 - Nov 13 2023

We are saddened to announce the passing of Mark Artis on Nov 13, 2023.

Originally from Matewan, West Virginia. Mark also called Georgia and Florida home before settling in Texas. Along the way he became a friend and mentor to many.

Mark lived life on his own terms. An Air Force Veteran, a Firefighter for the Valdosta, Georgia Fire Department. A lifelong racer and an amazing artist he amassed a long list of stories and life adventures that he would share over a cold drink, around a kitchen table or anywhere a willing set of ears were eager to listen to his philosophy as well as cautionary tales of racing cars and life adventures. His family and friends are left with many memories and anecdotes to fall back on when they are surely missing his mischief.

He had a way with words to say the least. One of his famous quotes was “I don’t think I like people anymore”. While not exactly true, like most things he did, he either liked you or not. If he did, he was the best friend you could have, if not well…

He expected the best of himself and drove those around him to the same level. Mark had a love for all things mechanical and was the owner of Texas Thunder Performance, co-founder of Texas Outsiders racing series. A walking encyclopedia on racing among other things, an instrumental member of many NSS racing organizations. In recent years, he was an integral member of a Funny Car racing team while continuing his efforts at Texas Thunder. He also restored antique firearms and was a master at Dot drawing and other art.

He will live long in the memories of those who knew him. Mark was one of a kind.

He was predeceased by his parents Donald and Blanche Artis, Aunts and Uncles. Mark is survived by his wife Patricia Dixon, Stepchildren Alicia and James Dixon, Sister Donna Talerico, Son Mark Artis Jr, Daughter Stephanie Heidelbach, Grandsons Troy Artis and Ian Heidelbach, Aunt Pauline Roberson, Cousin Kaye Carroll, and niece Crystal Evans. Stepchildren, Alicia and James Dixon.

We will all miss him greatly.
