Margaret K. Cater

Margaret Elizabeth Kittredge Cater passed on September 10, 2015 at the age of 95. She was born on August 21, 1920 in Evanston, Illinois to Margaret and Bernard S Kittredge.    Margaret spent her early childhood in Cincinnati, Ohio attending finishing school at Finch Junior College in New York. In 1942 Margaret married Robert W. Schleh. After six weeks of marriage, Robert Schleh who was an Air Force pilot in WWII, went into service and was later reported missing in action. Three years later he was declared killed in the Pacific Theatre. During this period of time, Margaret attended the University of Omaha receiving a BA in Philosophy. She then went to the University of Cincinnati to pursue a second major in psychology. In May of 1946 she married Edward W. Wakeland, who was also an Air Force bomber pilot. Margaret and Edward had four children and were married for 20 years. During that time Margaret attended Texas Christian University and received BA in Psychology. Margaret published a book of poems called “The Moon Shines at Sundown” in 1963. An active member of the Baha’i Faith, Margaret relocated with her children to Oahu, Hawaii in 1967. She married Walter C. Cater in 1968. She attended the University of Hawaii and received a BA in Sociology. She also became a certified Adlerian Family and Marriage Counselor, and is the author of “Action Guide for Effective Discipline in the Home and School” an accompaniment to the “Practical Parent” written by Dr. Corisini and Dr. Painter for use in the Parent Study Groups in 1992. In 1994, Margaret and Wally relocated to Gainesville, Florida. Margaret remained there until the death of her husband Walter. She then relocated to Texas and has been a resident since 1997, settling in Allen in 2000. As a member of the Baha’i Faith, Margaret was the National Archivist in Hawaii for many years. She also was a member of the National Baha’i Schools Council. She served on many Local Spiritual Assemblies in different cities throughout her active life, (an annually elected position). Margaret was a scholar, she loved to read, do research, and was revered by one and all in the Baha’i Faith and wider community.   Margaret has transformed countless lives both in and out of the Baha’I Faith as a counselor and recently finished an un-published book titled “Fireside Answers” that has 1200 pages of material. She is survived by children, Margo K. Gale of Wailuku, Hawaii, Dr. Edward K. Wakeland and wife, Dr. Linda Smith of Dallas, Texas, Mrs. Melissa W. Mercadante and husband Michael A. Mercadante of Allen, Texas, and Carl K. Wakeland and his wife Gabrielle Garrett of Santa Cruz, California. She has eight grandchildren including Nathan K. Hobdy of Wailuku, Hawaii, Byron N. Hobdy of Honolulu, Hawaii, Kiyomi M. Ramirez of Columbia, South Carolina, Nicholas A. Mercadante of Allen, Texas, Benjamin E. Wakeland of Dallas, Texas, Kyle W. Mercadante of Allen, Texas, Andrea G. Wakeland of Santa Cruz, California and Christopher G. Wakeland of Santa Cruz, California. She also has six great-grandchildren from the ages of 14 months to 12 years.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Monday, September 14, 2015 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home Chapel in Allen, Texas. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. A reception will be at the home of Michael and Melissa Mercadante following the graveside service.
