Lyell Robert van de Laar, 67, passed away unexpectedly due to natural causes over the weekend of April 17, 2026. He was born on June 17, 1958, in Pretoria, South Africa, to June and William van de Laar, who predeceased him. Lyell was the devoted father of Ian and Eric, whom he shared with his former wife, Laura Leonard van de Laar. He is survived by his son Ian; his brother, Berne and wife Lezley; his sister, Michele and husband Terry; his nieces, Amber and Devin; and his nephews, Tyler and Lloyd. He is also lovingly remembered by his dear NY friends Michael and Joanne, and their daughter Audrey, who held a special place in his heart. Since moving to Texas to be closer to his brother Berne, Lyell became part of a special extended family group, spending special holidays and celebrations together. Lyell then also met a wonderful group of Meditation friends that met most Saturdays and who had a great influence on his life.
In his early years, Lyell pursued his passion as a magician, a pursuit that brought him both success and the opportunity to travel the world. That spirit of curiosity and adventure remained with him throughout his life.
After completing a rigorous and highly competitive software training program, he went on to build a distinguished career as a software Programmer/Analyst, earning respect for his intellect, precision, and problem-solving ability. In 1986, Lyell emigrated to the United States in search of greater opportunity, where he established a successful and rewarding professional life.
Beyond his career, he was a man of quiet generosity, often extending help to others without recognition. Lyell found joy in travel, time with friends, Broadway theatre, Formula One racing, sailing, and was especially known for his exceptional baking, which he delighted in sharing.
He will be remembered for his keen mind, adventurous spirit, and kind heart. His absence leaves a lasting void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
Until we meet again where “Die son skyn, die voëls sing”. Godspeed on your journey, Lyell.
A Celebration of Lyell’s Life will be held on the 30th of May. For more details, please email: Lyell@bvandelaar.com and Lez will get back to you.
