Lucy “Smitty” Clift

Lucy Nerine “Smitty” Clift of Allen, Texas passed away February 7, 2023 at the age of 97.  She was born on August 26, 1925 to Edward DeWitt Smith and Hilda (McIntyre) Marshall in Princess Anne, Maryland.  Lucy was married to the late Captain Frank Walter Clift, III USN Retired on July 10, 1948 at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Virginia and they enjoyed nearly 51 years of marriage before his passing in 1999.  Frank’s United States Navy duties moved them to many places such as Cuba, Italy, Massachusetts, California, Virginia and Florida to name a few.  They never requalified for any state more than once and they made each place home.  Lucy worked briefly as a nurse, then she devoted her time to raising her children and caring for her family.  Lucy played on a golf team in Southern California for 20 years.  She was also an avid Bridge player.  Smitty was of the Episcopal faith.  Smitty was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend.  She will be missed dearly by those who knew and loved her.

Lucy is survived by her son, Gary Walter Clift and wife, Ana Maria of Allen, Texas; daughter, Laurie Karen Calland of Williamsburg, Virginia.; grandchildren; Nicole, Erin, Jennifer, Melissa, Amanda, Ana Maria, Frank, Kevin, and Daryl; twenty-five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren and a host of other loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Capt. Frank Clift, III; parents, Edward Smith and Hilda Marshal; and daughter, Heather Lynn Volonikis.

A funeral mass will be held  2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1515 North Greenville Avenue, Allen, Texas.  Lucy will be interred with her husband at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211 on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 1:30 p.m.

The family will receive family and friends during a visitation on Monday, February 20, 2023 from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home Chapel, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013.
