Lt. Col. Greg "Hambone" Hammond, USAF, Ret.

Lt. Col. Greg Hammond USAF (Ret.), age 70, of Frisco, Texas passed away on September 15, 2017.  Known to his friends and colleagues by his call sign “Hambone”, Greg was born December 19, 1946, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Edgar Eugene and Mary Louise (Hertweck) Hammond.  He married his high school sweetheart, Donna Iline Leet, in Louisville, Kentucky, on June 14, 1969.

Greg earned a BSC degree from the University of Louisville, and an MBA from the University of Oklahoma.  He received his USAF commission in 1971.  He earned his wings from Vance AFB in Enid, Oklahoma, in 1973.  Greg was stationed in USAFE flying the F-15 Eagle at Soesterburg AFB in the Netherlands and Bitburg AFB in Germany during his distinguished career.  He retired after 21 years of service at Griffiss AFB, Rome, New York, in 1992.  He was a member of the Order of Daedalains 23rd Flight – Dallas and a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Donna Hammond of Frisco, Texas; two sons, Gregory E. Hammond II and wife Leann, of Plano, Texas, Scott Michael Hammond and wife Malinda of Keller, Texas; two grandchildren, Blake Ryan Hammond and Logan Caroline Hammond; niece, Roberta Steutermann and family of Crestwood, Kentucky. 

Greg is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kathleen Brown.

A Visitation will be held at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home, 8520 Main Street, Frisco, Texas 75033, on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.  A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 8000 El Dorado Parkway, Frisco, Texas 75033, on Thursday, September 21, 2017, beginning at 11:00 AM.  Interment will follow at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211.
