Linda Lou Watson Van Horn went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 7, 2020. Linda will be laid to rest at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas. She did not suffer and was surrounded by immediate family. The presence of God was strongly felt as she was wrapped tightly in the serenity of her Guardian Angels wings. This obituary is not the end but an exciting beginning as she is now embraced by God and pre-deceased family and friends. Anyone who knows Linda can smile knowing she is getting things ready for others. This memo is a celebration of Linda’s life and sharing her incredible accomplishments.
Linda was born July 4, 1942 (yes, she is a little firecracker). Born and raised in Boardman, Ohio she graduated High School in 1960. Radio was her next goal, which was accomplished in Youngstown, Ohio. She had her own evening show at WBBW Radio by call sign “Misty”. Fun fact: she was a finalist to host The Romper Room TV show! She met her husband, Bill Van Horn, at the radio station and was married in Lorain, Ohio in 1964. Loved by her in-laws and expanding family, she took on a new challenge – college! While working full time at a school for the handicapped, she received a Special Education Degree with emphasis on early childhood development from Lakeland Community College then eventually getting her BSC in Education from Cleveland State University (all that while raising 2 kids and a full time job!). Proud to share that she was nominated for OHIO’s Teacher of the year for her involvement with the “inclusion/head start” program and even featured on local TV. Her teaching legacy will continue as her granddaughter (Morgan Lynn Richards) is following in her footsteps by teaching special education in North Texas!
When ready to retire, she traveled extensively with Bill between Ohio, Florida and Texas before deciding to move to Texas in 2006 and be near family as both kids and granddaughter lived in North Texas. She enjoyed taking business trips with her kids, Dorie and Billy, to enjoy whatever adventure unfolded! In-between all the fun times with family and friends in Texas she enjoyed traveling with Bill on multiple cruises, enjoying time shares in Arkansas, Mississippi, and favorite places around Texas.
Linda was heavily involved with her place of worship in Plano, Texas (Custer Road United Methodist Church). She was active in several programs such as Bed Start, Cross Ministry, Vacation Bible School and Summer Lunch Program. Wanting to continue her service work, she became a Lay minister to help share God’s message in nursing homes and residences throughout North Texas.
Linda loved to read and share her faith with children the teachings of God. Leading by example and full of humility, she always attracted people to listen to her positive message. She enjoyed her morning coffee, egg McMuffin and bird watching – cardinals were always her favorite. Keep a look out for a cardinal as she might just fly by and pay you a visit . Fun times were spent by family at Billy and Missi’s Texas ranch holding newborn puppies, goat, rabbits while observing horses, birds and deer play. She enjoyed staking claim to her favorite tree, watching every sunrise/ sunset possible and enjoying a good old-fashioned cookout. Simply put, being with family was her “happy place.”
During the challenges with Cancer, her attitude was always positive. She maintained a sense of humor and willing to do whatever it took. Her strength to balance family, her own recovery and faith in God was humbling to witness.
She enjoyed sharing the phrase “forever and a day” as it carries more meaning now than ever. Linda as a wife, mom, grandma, in-law, child of God and friend is ready for a prayer chat anytime you want to say hello. We all look forward to someday seeing that big smile again, feeling the tightest hug and sweetest of kisses on the cheek. Positive thoughts are endless, and her life will always be celebrated – THAT is how she wanted to be remembered. Until then, look up and smile ??
Linda is survived by her husband, Bill Van Horn, Jr.; daughter, Dorie Van Horn; son, Billy Van Horn and wife, Missi; granddaughter, Morgan Lynn Richards and several nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Ruth Watson; brother, Bob and sister, Sally.
