Lawrence Kenneth Hovey
Lawrence Kenneth Hovey, 80, passed away on December 24, 2023, at his residence in Katy, TX.
Larry was born on July 17, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan to Donald and Virginia Hovey. He was the first born of four children.
He grew up with his brothers, Roger and Doug, as well as his sister Victoria in Royal Oak, Michigan. He graduated from Royal Oak Dondero High School in 1961 and then attended Michigan Technological University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering in 1966.
During this time, Larry met and married his first wife, Alberta. They went on to have two sons, Andrew and David. They made their life together in California. Alberta preceded Larry in death.
Larry’s education, talent, and work ethic set him apart from others in his field. He traveled around the world to many countries as an expert in heavy metal vessel welding. He loved his career in engineering and remained on the job until the age of 75. Larry was also a dedicated sports fan. He especially loved his Detroit Red Wings and Tigers. In his younger years, he played baseball and ice hockey. As a father, he coached. In his later years, he avidly followed several sports. He was also a beer enthusiast and a lover of travel.
During his travels, Larry met his second wife Evelyn “Maxine” Hovey. They blended their families and went on to enjoy 33 years of marriage. They shared their love of food, traveling the world, entertaining family, and spending time with their beloved pets.
Larry’s family has so many wonderful memories with him.
Andrew was fortunate to have his dad coach his hockey teams until he was 16 years old.
David fondly remembers Larry teaching him to play golf.
Sally was excited when she learned we were finally getting brothers!
Jamie enjoyed traveling with Larry and Maxine.
Sharon and Larry enjoyed talking about politics.
Nova was walked down the aisle by Larry on her wedding day.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Virginia, his brother Douglas, and his first wife, Alberta.
Larry is survived by his wife, Evelyn “Maxine” Hovey, his sons Andrew (Renee) Hovey, and David Hovey; his step-daughters Jamie (Jeff) Niswander, Sally Cooper, Nova (Bill) Brzozowski, and Sharon (Peter Zink) Cocco; his 6 Grandchildren, Danielle, Diana, Megan, Natalie, Sophia, and Blaze; his 9 Great-Grandchildren, Hunter, Gabriel, Hayden, Kaden, Cullen, Hadley, Jayde, Kaylee, and Mathis; his brother Roger (Leslie) Hovey and his sister Victoria (Lawrence) Pecora.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 PM, Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Turrentine Jackson Morrow Funeral Home, 701 North Cedar Street, Leonard, Texas 75452. The family will welcome guests at a visitation an hour prior. After the services, there will be a burial at Leonard Cemetery.
