Lauriece "Suity" Cureton February 7, 2009 - April 8, 1925 Lauriece "Suity" (Lyon) Cureton, age 83, of Whitewright, Texas, died Saturday, February 7, 2009, at Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas. She was born April 8, 1925 in Mosheim (Bosque County), Texas, the daughter of the Laurence and Cordie (Barnett) Lyon. After graduating from Clifton Junior College, Suity married Joe Cureton on February 16, 1945 in Meridian, Texas. Suity was very active in a number of volunteer and civic activities. She served on the Grayson County Sesquicentennial Committee. She was awarded numerous national volunteer awards by the American Red Cross, including Volunteer of the Year. She still holds the national record for the number of aquatic schools attended (56) as a staff member and student. She was awarded the International Swimmers Hall of Fame Paragon Award in 2003. She was also a long time member of the Commodore Longfellow Society and served as National Commodore for two terms, the only woman to serve in that capacity. She taught swimming and lifesaving as many summers to the youth in Whitewright. She also taught many Red Cross First Aid classes over the years in North Texas. She was an experienced instructor in the Dale Carnegie Programs and taught over 10 classes. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Whitewright. She is survived by her husband Joe Cureton; daughter, Tressa (Cureton) Peckham and husband Larry of Georgetown, TX; son, Will Cureton of Dallas, TX; four grandchildren, Michelle Peckham of Providence, RI; Chris Cureton and wife Jenny of Dallas, TX; Tim Cureton of Providence, RI; and Emily Cureton of New York, NY; great-grandchild Cameron Cureton of Dallas, TX; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant sister, and brothers, J. L and Ronald Lyon. The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday, February 9, 2009 at Earnheart Chapel, Whitewright. Funeral services will be at the First United Methodist Church of Whitewright at 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 10, 2009. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Whitewright, Texas. Officiating the service will be Rev. Doyle Henderson.
