Lawrence “Larry” Stephen Kopp (age 83) passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, March 30, 2023, in McKinney, Texas.
Larry, the only child of Louis and Stephanie Kopp, was born on November 15, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois. As a young child, Larry miraculously survived Bright’s disease. Later, he learned to play the violin, performing once at Carnegie Hall. Larry also played a blonde upright string bass in a band called the Melodiers while completing his degree at the University of Illinois. After college, he had a brief stint in the army where he trained as a forward observer but didn’t see any action. During that time, Larry met the love of his life, proposed over the phone, and married Careen Ann Kopp in 1962. He had a long, successful career in sales and marketing with AMP, Inc., moving several times between Illinois, Pennsylvania, Iowa, and Minnesota. After retirement, Larry devoted himself to caring for Careen; living a while in Arizona before finally coming to Texas. He loved his family, cruising, classical music, and a good veal piccata.
Larry is preceded in death by his infant son, Donald Russell Kopp. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Careen Kopp; sons Steve (and Linda) Kopp and Jeff (and Shannon) Kopp; and grandchildren, Aaron, Caris, Lyla, and Cameron.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to one of Larry’s favorite charities: Mercy Home for Boys & Girls in Chicago (mercyhome.org) or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org).
