Mrs. Lane Smith McDonald Cauthen (1941–2026)
We celebrate the life of Mrs. Lane Smith McDonald Cauthen, who passed away at the age of 85 on June 17, 2026.
Lane was born on May 28, 1941, in Farmersville, Texas, to Tommie C. and Madge (Currin) Smith—two people who clearly had a hand in raising a woman who would go on to raise just about everyone else. She later married Alphard Nelson Cauthen in Farmersville.
She was a proud graduate of Farmersville High School and East Texas State University, where she served as President of the Chi Omega – Sigma Zeta Chapter—proving early on that she could lead, serve, and still make sure everyone was having a good time along the way. It was there she stepped into what would become her lifelong calling: shaping young minds. Over a remarkable 30+ year career, she taught elementary students in Blue Ridge, Community and Princeton ISD, leaving behind generations of readers, thinkers, musicians and better humans who can still hear her encouraging words. If you can properly spell, play/sing a rhyme, or sit still for longer than five minutes, you may very well have her to thank.
Lane was a faithful woman of God who loved the Lord deeply and lived that faith daily—not just in church pews, but in consistent acts of kindness. She was a devoted member of both First Baptist Church and Bethlehem Baptist Church of Farmersville while volunteering at Grace Fellowship. Her life was grounded in love, service, and unwavering belief.
Her yard was her happy place—a little slice of beauty she tended with pride and a watchful eye for “Yard of the Month.” She loved sitting outside, soaking it all in, and creating a space where folks could pause, chat, and enjoy it on their way to or from the Dairy Queen. The official title never found its way to her yard, but anyone who passed by knew she’d already won.
Lane also had a deep love for music. She played the piano beautifully and with heart, often turning even the simplest nursery rhyme into a personalized song. If there was a tune to be played, she could add a flourish to it—and if there wasn’t one, she’d create it herself. Many were blessed to learn under her patient instruction, where lessons often came with equal parts skill, encouragement, and love.
Her generosity knew no limits. Lane loved everybody, especially the sick, the young, the elderly, and those who were often overlooked. She had a quiet but powerful way of noticing need and meeting it, often sharing what little she had with those who had even less. Her life was a testament to the idea that kindness does not require abundance—only willingness.
She is survived by her loving family, including her daughters, Kerri McDonald Todd and Melissa McDonald Horn and her husband Jason; her granddaughter, Whitney Ellis; and her great-grandson, Kayden Ellis—each of whom carries forward her legacy of faith, humor, and compassion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Cauthen; her parents, Tommie C. and Madge Smith; and her sisters, Raenelle Hanes and Tommie Sue Johnson.
A visitation will be held at Hurst’s Fielder-Baker Funeral Home from 6:00–8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Farmersville on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with interment to follow at IOOF Cemetery in Farmersville, Texas.
In honor of Lane, feel free to share the love of Christ, plant something, teach someone, play a little music, or simply be kind to a neighbor—you’ll be doing exactly what she would have done.
She taught us well, loved us deeply, and left this world a little brighter (and certainly more in tune) than she found it.
