Kenneth "Ken" Wayne Thompson

Kenneth “Ken” Wayne Thompson of McKinney, Texas passed away on September 18, 2020 at the age of 85. He was born April 4, 1935 to Tommy Thompson and Kate Harshberger in Lexington, Oklahoma. Ken grew up in Norman, Oklahoma where he played high school football, leading the state of Oklahoma in scoring and rushing. He graduated from Norman High School in 1953, and went on to play football for Oklahoma University and the University of Central Oklahoma. He received a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Ken married Barbara Ann Mitchell on April 5, 1957 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. After their marriage, they had two children, Kelly and Toban. Over the years, they lived in many locations across the US.

He worked for several large life insurance companies, serving mostly as Vice President of Marketing. He was also Chairman of the Board of the Marketing Vice President’s Association of America (an insurance industry marketing association).  Over many years this allowed he and Barbara to visit over 25 countries.

Ken coached his son in various sports and enjoyed watching his children compete.

He was a member of Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas, and he enjoyed serving his church as a volunteer.

Ken is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Ann Thompson of McKinney, Texas; children, Kelly Peterson and husband, Thad of Seabrook Island, South Carolina and Toban Thompson and wife, Colleen of Frisco, Texas; grandchildren, Mitchell Lyons M.D., Andrew Peterson, Grace Peterson, Cody Thompson, Riley Thompson, Ashley Gressman, Austin Dane, Jonathan Swindoll Thompson; brother, Curtis Thompson, Norman, Oklahoma; sisters, Jean Thompson Miller of Norman, Oklahoma, Beverly Thompson Middaugh and husband, Bill of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and a host of other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lahoma Thompson.

A memorial service will be held at Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas on Saturday, September 26th at 11:00 am. There will be a live stream of the service on YouTube.
