IN LOVING MEMORY

Kenneth Wayne Burd

May 14 1964 - Jan 10 2018

Ken to his friends, Kenny to his family, was brilliant. He was the 1982 Valedictorian of Seguin High School, TX. When preparing to enter college, he took the SAT’s and missed one question. The testing service sent him the question that he missed with his score, and he said very humbly, “Oh, I knew the answer to that.”

Texas A&M offered him a 4 year Presidential Scholarship, and he started as an Aggie in August of 1982. In his spare time, Ken and a few of his friends, started creating a computer game, Master of Orion, which eventually took over his time and he left school to pursue his dream.

Master of Orion was released in 1993 and won Computer Gaming World's Strategy Game of the Year award in June 1994. More games followed including Master of Magic which Imagine Games Network reviewed as the best fantasy strategy game ever made and placed as one of their "Top 25 Games of All Time" in 2000.

In 2005 Ken moved to Boston, MA to be a Senior Systems Designer on Lord of the Rings Online, and in 2013 to Los Gatos, CA to be a Senior Systems Designer on Neverwinter, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game based on the acclaimed Dungeons & Dragons.

You would never meet a more caring person who would do anything for his friends. To help one of his friends, Ken shared his home in Austin with his friend and his friend’s family. Ken said it was great because he had a family, and that was very important to him since he never married. Ken listened more than he talked, but when he talked people listened because what he said was important. He had a very dry wit and sense of humor and he frequently smiled.

In 2016, Ken came home to Texas. In April of 2017, Ken had a seizure, and we discovered he had stage-four malignant melanoma that he succumbed to on January 10, 2018.
