Joseph P. Cullinane, born June 26, 1927 in Boston, Massachusetts to Joseph and Marie (nee McGuire), died Friday, July 30, 2004 after a short illness in Dallas, TX. Cullinane served in the U. S. Navy in the Pacific during WWII as a signalman aboard the CVE-45 and the Bonne Homme Richard aircraft carriers. Following discharge in 1946 he graduated from Suffolk University in Boston in 1950. While attending college he worked for the Boston Record-American, and later with WBZ-TV and WEEI-CBS in marketing and communications. In 1956 he moved with his wife Pearl, and 3 sons, Glen, Michael, and Scott, to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to work for the Bendix Launch Support Division, and later as a correspondent for the ABC network with the late Jules Bergman. He joined Rockwell International following the Apollo I launch-pad fire, and began a 17 year assignment that included assistance to the world wide press representatives during every manned launch starting with Gemini 4 through the sixth Shuttle flight, including all of the Apollo Moon missions. He was responsible for preparing and maintaining pressroom facilities to train the hundreds of radio, TV, and newspaper correspondents on spacecraft hardware. In 1964 he transferred to Rockwell’s corporate offices in Pittsburgh, but continued with his space mission duties. Four years later he was transferred to Richardson to handle communication duties when Rockwell purchased the Collins Radio Company. He retired from Rockwell in 1994. Cullinane was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl, and is survived by his sons, a daughter-in-law, Dr. Donna Rich-Cullinane residing in Houston, and two grandchildren, Alexis and Chase, both residing in the Dallas area. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Dipietro of Rhode Island, and Mrs. Doris Thomas of Quincy, Massachusetts. Services are scheduled for 2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 1201 Alma in Plano. Interment will follow at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, TX. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home in Allen.
