IN LOVING MEMORY

John Marshall Hargett, M.D.

Dec 10 1948 - Jan 02 2021

John Marshall Hargett, M.D. of McKinney, Texas passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on January 2, 2021 at the age of 72. He was born on December 10, 1948 to Wilson Allen Hargett and Daphne Annis (Ready) Hargett in McGregor, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Judy Hargett; daughter, Julie Smith and husband, Scott of McKinney, Texas; son, John Hargett, II of Trenton, Texas; grandchildren, Jaimie Lynn Moore and husband, Christopher, Jonathan Smith, Tristan Smith, Rebecca Smith, and Ulysses Hargett; great-grandchild, Georgia Smith, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends, all of whom he loved very much. He was preceded in death by brother, Wilson Allen Hargett, II; sisters, Bobbye Jo Brown and Lillian Iva Hargett and parents, Wilson and Daphne Hargett.

After graduating from McKinney High School, John proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was stationed with Zulu Company at D'Nang and with Avionics at Marble Mountain in Vietnam. He married Judy Elaine Mason on April 20, 1968 at Jax Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida. Upon completion of his military commitment, John and Judy moved to McKinney and worked together at Jim's Pizza; during that time, an off-hand comment from his high school Chemistry teacher motivated John to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a doctor. He started a home-based milk route with Foremost Dairy to support his family and enrolled in classes at Grayson County College at night. John finished his pre-med program and Masters of Science in Microbiology at North Texas State University in Denton, TX, and then graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX in 1982. "Doc"  completed his residency in Family Practice through the Texas Tech Health Science Center in Amarillo, TX, and then opened his medical practice in McKinney, TX. He loved serving as football team doctor for McKinney High School and taking care of patients young and old as he served as Medical Director of the Pavilion Nursing Home. He is warmly remembered and loved by the Boy Scouts, members of his faith community, the Masonic Lodge, the VFW, and students that sat under his wealth of knowledge as he taught homeschool science classes during his retirement years. Doc was always ready with a tale ("all of them true, might be true, or with a little truth") to make you laugh or think or both. A tremendous source of joy for Doc these last few years came through the unexpected development of DNA testing and online ancestry services. Connecting and building relationships with 6 sons and 4 grandchildren born through the miracle of infertility medicine gave him a new energy and filled his heart. He was delighted to have the opportunity to connect with these amazing young men and their families. He loved them dearly, and was so proud of each of them.

Doc was an avid outdoorsman and forever student and teacher. He loved to hunt, fish, and play golf. He was a poet, a philosopher, and a supporter of freedom. As such, the family would like to honor him by continuing his support of Imprimis, a free publication of Hillsdale College committed to advancing the principles of liberty in America. Donations toward this effort can be made at https://secured.hillsdale.edu/hillsdale/imprimis, and you can also request a free subscription to learn more.
