Joe Melvin Griffis

Joe Melvin Griffis was born August 23, 1928 at Celeste, Texas to Jeremiah Jackson Griffis and Lola Alice New Griffis. He married Jaunice Modene Walls on August 25, 1949 in Greenville. She preceded him in death on August 26, 1995. He later married Lois Ann Boney on February 7, 1998 in Tom Bean. He passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on December 17, 2018 at the age of 90.

Joe was a long time and active member of the community in Whitewright. He was a local business man and the local barber. He served the city of Whitewright as Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem for many years. He was a member of the Hebron Baptist Church. He dearly loved his family and was very proud of them. He loved being a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was greatly loved and will be missed.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Griffis of Whitewright; son Mickey Griffis of Tom Bean; daughter, Mary and Greg Cox of Whitewright; son, Jerry and Sharon Griffis of Brownwood; daughter, Patricia Griffis of Bedford; son, Jimmy Earl Griffis of Bedford; step-sons, Vernon and Vicki James of Pennsylvania, Donald and Sherry James of Florida, Bobby and Teresa Badgett of Tennessee, and Michael and Tamara Railey of Pottsboro; 8 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 46 years, Jaunice; brothers and sisters, Kenneth, Tom, Dora Hunter, Starlen, Harlen, Lou Warren, Pearlie Lyday, Mattie Griffis, Mary Griffis, and William.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday 10AM, December 21, 2018 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel, Whitewright, Texas. Charles Wrenn will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Griffis, Bobby Griffis, Michael Griffis, Mikie Griffis, Don Griffis and Rod Earnheart. Interment will follow at Celeste/Hogeye Cemetery, Celeste, Texas. The family will receive friends during a visitation on Thursday 6-8PM, December 20, 2018 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Chapel, Whitewright, Texas.
