IN LOVING MEMORY

Joan E. Matthews

Jul 14 1931 - Mar 02 2022

Joan E. Matthews of McKinney, Texas passed away on March 2, 2022, at the age of 90. She was born on July 14, 1931 to Thomas Shields and Lillian Edith (Bannon) Goudie in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Joan married Raymond H. Matthews on September 12, 1950 in Mimico, Ontario, Canada.

Joan grew up on the shores of Lake Ontario in Mimico. She was the middle child in a family of three girls. The three of them were always so kind to everyone that later in life they were affectionately called the “goodie, goodie Goudie girls.”

Joan and Ray met in their high school German class, and he knew from the start that she was something special. They married in 1950 and soon began a journey that would take them around the world after Ray joined the Air Force. His service took them to Japan, Alaska, Washington D.C. and more, ultimately moving 28 times before settling in McKinney, Texas in 1993.

Joan’s kind and gentle spirit drew people to her. She listened to everyone, and everyone could talk to her. She would go into the grocery store and come out with her groceries and three new friends – so she never knew a stranger – and could find a fellow Canadian wherever she went, likely from the Maple Leaf lapel pin she’d regularly wear. While she loved the country of her birth and flew the Canadian flag proudly outside their home in McKinney on Canada Day, she was also proud to become a U.S. citizen in 1995.

She loved her family fiercely and would do anything for them. Many looked to Joan as their second mom because of her goodie-goodie-Goudie-girl kindness.

Joan is survived by her husband, Raymond Matthews of McKinney, Texas; daughter, Wendy Boyd of McKinney, Texas; son, Michael Matthews and wife, Patty of DeSoto, Texas; daughter, Cindy Moreland and husband, Steve of McKinney, Texas; son, Christopher Matthews and wife, Richelle of McKinney, Texas; 10 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents Thomas Shields and Lillian Edith (Bannon) Goudie and sisters Mary Goudie Cooke and Barbara Goudie Reason.

The family is hosting a Celebration of Life, Saturday, April 9. This informal reception will be from 3:00-6:00 p.m. with a service of remembrance during the reception at 3:30 p.m. The Celebration of Life will be at Stonebridge Country Club in McKinney, Texas.
