Jean, our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother was called to her heavenly home on December 9, 2022 in Carrollton, Texas where she was a resident of Sonoma House Senior Living Community. A woman of unyielding faith, Jean was the daughter of Henry Albert and Johnnie Holley Hastey, the ninth of 10 siblings. Born on February 6, 1930 in Abbeville, Alabama, she spent her early years in Donalsonville, Georgia, graduating from Seminole County High School. Later, she would attend Georgia State College where she studied accounting. On February 26, 1950 she married Edwin (Ed) F. Hayes, remaining a loving and supportive wife for 54 years. In 1967, they relocated to Texas, settling in Plano in 1977. Jean joined the City of Plano in February 1977 where she remained for 22 years. Twice during her tenure, which included management of the payroll function, she was named “Employee of the Year” due, in part, to her unwavering loyalty and dedication. Upon her retirement on February 26, 1998, “Jean Hayes Day” was declared in the City of Plano. During her retirement years, Jean loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and siblings and enjoyed a weekly Bible study with friends. She seldom missed the annual Hastey Family Reunion in Georgia, attending well into her senior years. Also, as a charter member of Parkway Hills Baptist Church, Jean faithfully used her gift of hospitality to cultivate lasting friendships while offering her administrative and accounting skills. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends.
She is survived by her son, Timothy E. Hayes and wife, Susan of Houston, Texas; daughter, Tami H. Chastain and husband Jeff of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; grandchildren, Jason Clark of Manhattan, Kansas; Stephen Hayes (Shelby) of Houston, Texas; Chandra McFarlen (Doug) of Abilene, Texas; David Hayes (Claire) of Houston, Texas; Alison McCutcheon (Cody) of Midland, Texas; great grandchildren, Trent, Luke, Joe, James, Charlie and Ella Jean (arriving March 2023); sister, Helen Doster (David) of Donalsonville, Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; brothers, Albert, Luther and Edward; and sisters, Mae, Frances, Lutie, Lillian and Mary Alice.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, December 16, 2022 at Parkway Hills Baptist Church, 2700 Dallas Parkway, Plano, Texas 75093. Following the service, a procession will make its way to Ridgeview Memorial Park for a committal service. A reception will be held at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home after the committal.
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit
in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates
on his law day and night, That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit
in season and whose leaf does not wither-whatever they do prospers.” ~ Psalm 1:1-3 ~
