Jay Mitchell Sharkey

Jay Mitchell Sharkey of McKinney, Texas passed away unexpectedly in a tragic motorcycle accident on August 1, 2020 at the age of 55. He was born June 11, 1965 to William and Marjorie (Clark) Sharkey in Miami, Florida. Jay graduated from M.D. Collins High School in College Park, Georgia in 1983 and later went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas. He married Loren Mayfield on April 17, 1999 in Houston, Texas. Jay worked in food sales for Hormel Foods for 22 years.  He was a long time member of First United Methodist Church in McKinney, Texas.

Jay was a kind and compassionate man who loved God and was committed to his family as a loving husband and father. He was an avid sports fan and he especially loved coaching his sons in baseball. His greatest joy in life was watching them grow and being a part of their lives. Jay was well respected and loved by his Hormel family. He won many accolades and awards during his tenure there. What Jay loved most was being with his family and traveling with them on the many vacations they took across America. He loved teaching his sons about life and always found the positive in everything. Jay was known to family and friends as someone who was generous to a fault and lightened up every room he walked into. He never met a stranger and everyone loved him.

Jay is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Loren Sharkey of McKinney, Texas; sons, Mitchell and Jack Sharkey of McKinney, Texas; mother, Marjorie Apicerno of Enola, Pennsylvania; sister, Laura McAteer and husband, Frank of Burlington, North Carolina and  their children, Sherri Galloway and her husband, David, Jill Aldridge and Frank McAteer and his fiancé, Allison; sister, Jill Tanner of Newnan, Georgia and her children, Nicolas Tanner and his wife, Shelley, Jay Tanner and his wife, Lauren and Daniel Tanner; sister, Suzanne Bucher and husband, Jay of Marysville, Pennsylvania, and their children, John Garman III and his wife, Sabrina, Natasha Cooper and her husband, James, Jacqueline Bucher and W. Bradford Bucher; several great-nieces, great-nephews and a host of other loving family and friends.

Jay was preceded in death by his father William Maxem Sharkey of Fairburn, Georgia.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home Chapel, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas, and will also be live streamed on the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Facebook page and a recorded video will be available following the funeral service on Jay’s obituary page.

Following the funeral service, a procession will make its way to Ridgeview Memorial Park for a committal service where all are invited to attend while maintaining social distancing.

In support of our local, state, and federal govt including CDC directives and to protect the physical health, safety and well-being of our community, only a limited number of guests will be allowed to attend the Funeral Service.

However, when the maximum number of guests are reached, those who would like to honor Jay and show their support to his family may remain at the funeral home in your vehicle, where you can watch the live streamed service on your personal device (laptop, tablet or smartphone) or listen through a designated FM radio channel.
