Jim Hamic was the coolest. If you did not meet him on this side of eternity, we hope you meet him on the other side. “Jimmy,” “Honey,” “Daddy,” “Big Jim,” “Papa Jim” went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, July 1, 2026 at 12:34pm.
James Tillman Hamic Sr. was born to Nancy Edith Ross and Garland Jefferson Hamic, Sr. in Crowley, Louisiana on October 16, 1944. He was the baby of 5 children. His 3 sisters, Claudia Hamic Adams, Geraldine Hamic Meche, Charlotte Hamic Smith, and his big brother Garland Jefferson Hamic, Jr. “Buddy,” will miss him greatly.
Jim was more than a “triple threat” – handsome, athletic, intelligent, funny, and kind. He was a leader. He met Jesus when he was 7 years old at First Baptist Church of Crowley, Louisiana. This interaction with the Holy Spirit gave him a love for people and shaped his life. He strived for excellence in all that he did. He was both valedictorian of Crowley High School and voted “The Gentleman of CHS.” He received the “Outstanding Youth of the Year” trophy all while playing football, basketball, baseball, and running track. He earned both an academic scholarship and an athletic scholarship to Louisiana State University where he played football and earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1967. There he met a beautiful, smart, Christian sorority girl Ann Williams and made her his wife. It was the LSU Tigers win over Arkansas Razorbacks in the Cotton Bowl that brought him to Dallas, Texas.
Jim and Ann built their lives in Plano, Texas. They had 2 children, Kimberly Ann Hamic Skaggs, married to David Alan Skaggs, and James Tillman Hamic, Jr. “Jimmy,” married to Kristen Marie Miller Hamic. Jim was a charter member of Prairie Creek Baptist Church. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1979 and continued his service to God and man by serving on various committees, singing in the choir, and participating in Vacation Bible School activities with his bride. He watched his children be baptized and married at PCBC, and even saw his grandsons baptized there. He was the ever-present rock of the family supporting his wife, children, and 11 grandchildren in all of their academic & sports endeavors: Kyle David Skaggs, Madeline Tiel Hamic, Trinity Grace Hamic, Mark Alan Skaggs, Charis Kimberly Hamic, Serenity Faith Hamic, Silver Evangeline Hamic, James Tillman Hamic III “Jake,” and bonus grandchildren: Jalen Malcolm Hammond, Kasey Marie Miller, and Chanse Malachi Miles.
At work, Big Jim served as Project Manager and traveled the world managing and executing defense programs for Texas Instruments, and later Raytheon, for 44 years. His FLIR project was said to have saved many soldiers’ lives. They even put his project on a G.I. Joe doll.
Aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, coworkers, and friends all attest to Jim Hamic’s leadership, his kindness, and his work ethic. He’s been described by many as “one of the good ones,” “a role model as a husband, father, & Christian man,” “one of my first heroes,” “a fine fellow and a great husband to my pseudo sister Ann,” “a kind, sweet man,” “always smiling and friendly,” “a great man,” “always so kind, loved to kid around, and truly a pillar of PCBC,” and we couldn’t agree more! Jim Hamic was special and is deeply missed.
Please join us to celebrate his wonderful life.
