Sharon Inez Phelan passed away in the early morning hours of August 12, 2023, in Prosper, Texas at the age of 79. She was born in McKinney, Texas on December 17, 1943, to Grady and Cleo Mills.
Inez was Baptized into the Church of Christ in 2009 at Westside Church of Christ in Round Rock, Texas. She has been a member of the Collin County Church of Christ in McKinney since 2014.
Inez graduated Prosper High School in 1962 and was devoted wife to Cleatus Manuel Phelan for forty-seven years. Inez was homemaker and a professional nanny for many years. Caring for other people, gardening, cooking and her dogs were her passions. She was a force in high school basketball and used that athletic ability in water skiing and tennis in her adult years. After retirement, she worked as an advocate for human rights of inmates in the Texas prison system.
She was the youngest of seven children and is preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings Truett Mills, Edith Mills Keller, Billy Ray Mills, Glenn Mills and Susie Coffey Mills.
She is survived by her brother Leon Mills of Emory, Texas; son, Rick Taylor of Leonard, Texas; and her daughters Mellisa Underwood of Joplin, Missouri, Julie Phelan of Prosper, Texas and Stacy Phelan-King of Midland, Texas; nephews, David Ray Mills of Sherman, Texas, Mike Mills of Denison, Texas, Jimmy Coffey of Bonham, Texas, and Clifton Mills of Kansas City Kansas.; nieces, Sandi Minette of Weston, Texas, Vida Sprot of Beaumont, Texas, Kathie Combest of Princeton, Texas, Nancy Butler of Wylie, Texas, Glenda Coffey Whitworth of Ector, Texas, and Judy Coffey Clark of Bonham, Texas; and several grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Friday, August 25, 2023, at Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013.
