Hugh Curtis Walker, 94, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2010, in Plano, Texas. Hugh was born near Bonham, Texas to Newton and Millie Walker, on August 11, 1915. After graduation from Randolph High School, he worked as an accountant in the lumber business. In the spring of 1936, he met Vera Walker from Mineral Wells, Texas, and they were married the following year. During World War II he and Vera moved to Vancouver, Washington to work in the shipyards for the war effort. In 1946 they relocated to Mineral Wells, Texas, where Hugh became partners with his father-in-law in the family owned J J Walker Grocery. He purchased the store outright in 1951, and successfully managed the store until his retirement in 1977. Hugh and Vera were active members of the First Methodist Church of Mineral Wells, and he participated in numerous community affairs, including membership on the Mineral Wells school board. In 1996 Hugh and Vera left their Mineral Wells home of 50 years and moved to Plano, Texas, to be closer to their daughter and her family. They became members of the Custer Road United Methodist Church in Plano, where they quickly made many new friends. Hugh’s wife Vera passed away in May, 2001.
