IN LOVING MEMORY

Howard Evans

Oct 10 1927 - Oct 18 2018

Howard O. Evans, 91, of Allen, Texas passed from this life on Thursday, October 18, 2018.  Howard (Ho) was born in DeSoto, Missouri on October 10, 1927, to Vernon and Genevieve Evans.  Ho graduated from DeSoto High School in 1945, and then joined the United States Air Force.  He honorably served as a pilot where he logged nearly 17,000 flight hours which included hurricane reconnaissance through 14 named storms, and duty flights over the North Pole and around the world.  Ho was a veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, and he took great pride in his service to this country.  After retiring from the Air Force, Ho moved to Austin, Texas in 1974, and joined the University of Texas and then the Texas State Highway Department, until he retired in 1993.  Ho married the love of his life, Mary K. Evans (Swob), in 1949 and they celebrated 68 joyful and adventure-filled years together.  He was a life-long student of all subjects, and his mind and body were in constant motion.  Ho had many passions and projects – all that he approached with precision and craftmanship.  He especially loved combining math, geometry, and computer aided drafting skills to create beautiful segmented woodturning pieces that he proudly displayed and gifted to his loved ones.  Ho was an active member of the Central Texas Woodturner’s Association, and enjoyed teaching the art of woodturning to all who would listen, including a class he taught this summer in Allen, Texas.  His other hobbies included birdwatching, gardening, wine-tasting, studying family genealogy, and traveling the world.  Ho was a gentleman in all ways, with a kind word and funny story for all - he will be deeply missed.

Ho is survived by his brother Robert Evans of Littleton, Colorado; daughters, Susan Hicks of Tacoma, Washington and Vicki McAlpin and husband, Blaine of Cheyenne, Wyoming; grandchildren, Shawn Jank and wife, Shawna, Eric Jank and wife, Teresa, Amanda Taylor, Melanie Surprise and husband, Jason, Rebecca Wilkins and husband, Steven and Casey McAlpin and wife, Dawn; as well as great grandchildren: Austin, Amanda, Bradley, Collin, Logan, Aleri, Alexandra, Samuel, Juliana, Hannah, and Libby.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ronnie and Jon; and his beloved wife.

A memorial service to celebrate Ho’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at Turrentine Jackson Morrow Funeral Home Chapel, 2525 Central Expressway North, Allen, Texas 75013. Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211.
