Horace (John) McCormack passed away at his home in McKinney, Texas, on March 25, 2024 at the age of 87.
Born in Bonham, Texas on July 8, 1936, he grew up in the Hale Community. He left home in his teen years and worked various jobs until he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant and earned numerous awards for his marksmanship abilities. After he left the Marines, he resided in Dallas where he started and successfully operated a construction business where he did both commercial and residential drywall finishing for many years until his retirement.
John was a man of few words, but he had a keen, quiet sense of humor. He had numerous friends throughout the years. He loved his family dearly and was generous to both friends and family.
John loved his farm in Dodd City Texas where along with his wife, he spent a number of years working in his garden, fishing in his pond and entertaining friends and family. He loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed traveling and seeing new places, but to him there was no place like home. Horace had a love of animals and had many dogs through the years.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Vickie McCormack; children, Audrey McCormack, Cherie McCormack Layton (Mark), Lisa Bump (Jeff), Jeffrey Harper; grandchildren, Rachel Lemieux (Josh), Amanda Eubanks (Nolan), Tristena Layton Melton (Steve), Reese Layton (Devan), Chase Layton, Dylan Layton, and Kristin Wood (Mitch); ten great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Angela Asplin; and a host of other loving family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Icy (DeWoody) McCormack; brothers, Paul, Glendon, James, Willard, Ray, and Tommy; sister, Betty Odum and his twin sister Doris.
