Dr. Henry Allen Spies, Jr.

Henry Allen Spies, Jr., 93 year old Leonard resident, passed away Wednesday October 10, 2018. He was born July 19, 1925 in Bonham, Texas to Henry Allen Spies, Sr. and Dillie Broyles Spies. He graduated from Ladonia High School in 1942 as valedictorian of his class. He attended East Texas University, Commerce, Texas, and received his Bachelor of Science Degree. A Graveside Service is scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Monday October 15, 2018 at the Willow Wild Cemetery at Bonham, Texas. Bro. Willie Johnson will officiate. Family visitation and viewing will be Sunday October 14, 2018 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Chapel at Leonard.

He served in the Army from 1944 to 1946 as a Median Tech 409 on the US Army Hospital Ship, Ernestine Karanda, for 6 tours of sea duty. Upon his discharge from the Army, he worked in Birmingham, Alabama for his uncle, Dr. Tom Spies, while he studied at the Alabama School of Medicine receiving his Masters Degree in Biochemistry and his Dental Degree at the School of Dentistry at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. He was accepted as a Fellow in the Royal Society of Health at London, England.

Dr. Spies joined the dental staff of the Marlin, Texas VA Hospital in 1961. After 3 years he transferred to the VA Hospital in Dallas where he served 34 years as Assistant Chief in the Dental Service and 23 years part-time as a professor at Baylor Dental School. He was a member of the American Academy of General Dentistry, American Association. He was a Master Mason for over 65 years.

He is survived by cousins and he was preceded in death by his parents, his uncle Dr. Tom Spies, as well as his sister, Betty Saunders, and his brother-in-law, Robert P. Saunders.
